The text of the Book of Mormon is flexible enough to let you manufacture your own Hill Cumorah pretty much anywhere in the world.
If you like Eritrea, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Chile, Peru, Panama, Guatemala, Yucatan, southern Mexico, Baja... Take your pick or add your own favorite.
No problem. No problem at all.
Of all the places I've visited, I'm thinking the south of France would be a fun place to put Cumorah. I could visit there often to do research. Another great place would be Rio de Janeiro. Or maybe the south island of New Zealand.
If you want to invent a Hill Cumorah in your favorite part of the world, you just need to:
1) ignore what the modern prophets and apostles have said* and
2) apply a flexible interpretation of the Book of Mormon text.
I put together a video that shows how to manufacture a Hill Cumorah in Mexico. It's based on one of my favorite blogs to follow. You can use the same techniques described on that blog to put Cumorah wherever you want.

*Note: You'll notice in the video how important it is to start with step #1. Don't skip step #1. This is the key to manufacturing your own Cumorah. If you make a mistake and pay attention to what the modern prophets and apostles have said, you pretty much have to stick with the Cumorah in western New York, a couple of miles south of Palmyra. That's not nearly as fun as inventing your own Cumorah in Mexico or wherever else you want.

What kind of blog is this? I stumbled upon it through google and this entry was startling. You are actually telling people to "ignore what the modern prophets and apostles have said".
ReplyDeleteI was hoping to gain insight into the wars of the Book of Mormon when instead this is just an apostate blog.
You're not reading carefully. LDS scholars who promote the Mesoamerican setting for the Book of Mormon do tell people to ignore what the modern prophets and apostles have said about Cumorah. Just go to Book of Mormon Central for examples. We disagree with those scholars because we accept what Joseph and Oliver said about Cumorah being in New York. This is very important for understanding the wars of the Book of Mormon. Go to moronisamerica.com for more info on the wars.

With all due respect Forkeo, this blog seeks to get people to listen, not ignore, "what the modern prophets and apostles have said." It's some, not all, LDS scholars who seek to get people to ignore what modern prophets and apostles have said. So this blog is an attempt to get people to read Oliver Cowdery's Letter VII and thereby "make Cumorah great again."
DeleteIn other words if you are really and truly interested in Book of Mormon geography I suggest going to the archive of this blog, begin at the beginning, and read through to the present (it might take you maybe a day). Then you'll understand why the hill Cumorah is in New York and why Book of Mormon events took place in North America--not Central America. Or get the book, "The Lost City of Zarahemla," or "Moroni's America," or any number of books written by Jonathan Neville on the subject.
Deleteyeah, it's a little hard to convey sarcasm without context. Good luck getting that guy to read more.
